The Senate, yesterday, passed for second reading a bill aimed at establishing the Federal University of Agriculture and Tropical Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State.
The bill, sponsored by the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), seeks to provide comprehensive management and administration for the proposed institution.
Bamidele, who led the debate on the bill, said the establishment of the university was part of the ongoing efforts to diversify the nation’s economy.
Meanwhile, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, put the request to voice vote and the bill was referred to the Senate Committees on Agriculture and Tertiary Education and TETFUND for legislative work and asked to report back in two weeks.
IN another development, workers of Osun State University, yesterday, accused Governor Ademola Adeleke of issuing threats against them for demanding improved welfare and better working conditions.
The workers expressed their displeasure against some remarks by the governor at the convocation ceremony of the state-owned institution.
BUT the governor has, however, re-affirmed his respect for and recognition of workers at the university for their invaluable contributions to the development of the institution.
Adeleke, while reacting through his Spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, reminded the union that workers’ welfare is the number one item on his governance agenda, assuring them that he supports improved conditions of service for all categories of workers.
He, however, tasked the union to go about their demands with all sense of responsibility to build on the gains so far made in the development of the university.
